Pick His Brain!

I’d like to introduce one of our members, Luke Fanders, for our next ‘Pick His Brain’ session and I want to thank him for the participation.

Luke is a YouTube video master and some swear by his skills.

People say he is a chronic tester and he knows a thing or two about video optimization.

Some claim he can rank videos on Google without moving his eyebrows.

If you have been thinking about expanding your presence online via video SEO, you can pick his brain.

Here are the rules.

1) I’ll let the thread go on until he asks me to stop. Theoretically, this thread can continue until FaceBook stock value goes to zero.

2) Please, no snarky remarks. I will not tolerate any intentional negativity. We are here to learn from each other’s success and strategies.

3) Please do not PM him and bother him. If you have a private question, ask for his permission on this thread when appropriate.

When creating a how to video to capture audiences, it’s it critical to use a mic and rented cameras, out can we just do a 4k video phone shoot with a nice room? And drop keywords in the how to as much as possible for the website you will be putting it on?

I focus more on the ranking side. I generally outsource the video creation.

But I’ve had high and low quality videos convert.

What are some common mistakes made by video SEO guys when trying to rank on Google?

Not diversifying anchors, not indexing links.

What do you see as the future of video SEO?

It’s leaning more towards embeds.

I think they shift the algorithm to match music videos and other viral videos.

They generally get shared on sites (embeds).

What does your business model look like?

Mainly lead gen. I do some white label video SEO.

How different are your processes for ranking videos on Google vs ranking them on YouTube. In other words, are some factors more important for the native YT platform, while other factors are more important for ranking in organic search outside of YT?

YT can be gamed more with interactions and views. Google you need links and embeds.

Any tools that you recommend that are specific to YouTube videos? For example, I’ve played around with TubeBuddy, but I’m not sure what the pros are using.

I use Ahrefs mainly for link and keyword research.

I use a lot of different link building and embed tools.

Could you share your top resources for video creation?

I use Filmora to add effects and CTA etc…

Usually just use fiverr for spokesperson type videos which are good for conversions.

Have you been able to force a video into local search results? Ex a bail bonds NYC. If so, how?

Powering up tier 1 and 2 links and make sure they are indexed.

I don’t think it’s so much forcing as it is powering up the video to make it rank.

Do you use an indexing service, or do you just do Google’s URL submit for indexing?

I use a couple different indexers index inject, indexification and also some traffic tricks to index.

Are there some types of local search the you have found that simply won’t rank on page one with video?

No I think anything can be ranked.

What’s the best way to get into the recommended videos?

Traffic manipulation. Depends on what kind of videos you want to pull up on.

What do you think of tools like Vidiq & Tubebuddy? what do you use?

I don’t use them but have heard good things about them.

I use Ahrefs usually for most research.

And for on page I tested pretty much every variable you can think of so I use that for on-page optimization.

Have you ever tried to use video for outreach? I mean instead of sending a plain text outreach email, you record a video and send it. What’re the things I should focus on to impress a prospect through a VIDEO?

I don’t do that but I think it is a good way to do outreach.

Maybe show them some rankings you have in the niche you reach out in.

What do you consider the top YouTube search ranking factors in order? CTR, likes, video engagement etc?

CTR, Views, Embeds, Likes, Comments. But you can use a combination of any of them to rank.

Are there any services you recommend? Or have you created your own tools?

A lot of my own tools.

But you could test some view providers as long as the video isn’t monetized.

You can’t run fake views to a monetized video or you’ll probably get a flag.

1) What’s the best way to boost CTR? 2) Could you point me in the direction of a tool (I know you have your own though) and some pointers here? 3) Do they need to be unique browsers, IP’s, 4) Is it CTR from the SERPS or from within the YT search for your keyword?

I don’t know of a tool right now.

I have a custom made one that is decent.

And I also have developers working on one that is going to blow all other traffic bots out of the water.

Which I might release to the public.

Yes they need to be unique. SERPs and YT search. Or the videos tab also works.

What’s your favorite link building software?

Rankerx, Scrapebox, GSA anything that can build links I can rank with.

Started using SEO Autopilot recently.

Without going into competitive intelligence, which niches work the best and the worst when it comes to YouTube lead generation in your opinion?

I think Ecom is one that is overlooked on the SEO side.

Worst would probably be one with a low payout and low volume.

I do a lot in the car accident lawyer niche and it’s pretty good.

Any specific do’s and don’ts when it comes to ranking videos for local businesses?

Do diversify anchor text and don’t believe people that tell you certain niches don’t rank with YT in Google.

Local is probably the easiest to rank.

Since the recent addition of the “Video 3 pack” have you noticed a drop in single vidoes ranking if there is a video 3 pack present? Do you have any insight on how the videos are selected for the 3 pack? Is it the top 3 ranking videos on YT show in the 3 pack or something different?

The 3-pack position is determined by the strongest video.

So all 3 videos might be #3 in Google but only the top video would have been there before the update.

Google will generally pull 2 related videos if there is 1 video strong enough to be on page.

1. They are also pulling videos embedded in sites into the fold which is new.

I would say videos are selected the same way as before but now you have weaker videos piggybacking to page 1 off the strength of other videos.

If you have 3 strong videos they will all be in the 3-pack.

Whats the best ways to get search views these days on Google? What bot do you use?

I would say rank a video.

But if you want to manipulate it either a bot or something like micro workers.

I have a custom bot.

I bought and tested all the ones I could find and they were lacking so had to have one built.

Something that mimics human behavior. Types out the keyword, scrolls around, etc…

The new one I have some developers working on is AI to the max.

You can’t even tell it’s a bot. Plus will have logged in G accounts doing a lot of the interacting.

Do you have a recommended YouTube video link that ranks (not yours) that we can study?

Google make money online and put that video in Ahrefs. The deadbeat affiliate one has some pretty good links.

Do you age the videos before ranking them?

Do you not recommend doing live anymore v. norm yt vid?

You can do it either way. I don’t use live never really have.

In my testing live videos take more work to make them stick long term. But I think you can rank either one.

I heard the 1st 24 hours is the most important in ranking YT vids (google tests vid engagement hard), do you find this to be true? also any other timing caveats?

But they do rank videos for the first few days and then they’ll drop them.

When ranking in Google it has more to do with backlinks and embeds if you want the ranking to stick.
