Pick His Brain!

I’d like to introduce one of our members, Ben Line, for our next ‘Pick His Brain’ session and I want to thank him for the participation.

Ben is a full stack developer & contributor in the Shopify ecosystem and has founded a digital agency called Wecre8websites.

What’s impressive is the page load speed which gives 100% PageSpeed Score using his custom library called LazyBoi.js.

I am super impressed with his solution and this has to be the best speed optimization I’ve seen to date.

you have any questions related to super fast loading websites, please feel free to pick his brain.

Here are the rules.

1) I’ll let the thread go on until he asks me to stop. Theoretically, this thread can continue until the FaceBook stock value goes to zero.

2) Please, no snarky remarks. I will not tolerate any intentional negativity. We are here to learn from each other’s successes and strategies.

3) Please do not PM him and bother him. If you have a private question, ask for his permission on this thread when appropriate.

Best apps for shopify seo?

I don’t recommend any, most apps add additional requests to the load.

For speed optimization, you are best optimizing the codebase yourself, like changing png to jpeg.

Then you are best hiring a professional to remove the bloat in your theme.

Any WP Super Optimized Amazon Affiliate Kinda theme you can recommend? Free/Paid both.

I’m afraid not. I haven’t used them.

Does LazyBoi.js work well with Elementor?! What is a good image compressor that you recommend and final question your views on Cloudflare CDN? Seeing configuration issues many a time on the low end plans.

1. Yes LazyBoi works with Elementor, you just need to make your main tag point to LazyBoi…

2. If you have mac -> https://photobulkeditor.com/ is impressive but when I’m on windows I just use https://bulkresizephotos.com/en

3. Never had any issues with Cloudflare myself but I’ve read about that. I use netlify which is Cloudflare backbone as standard and never had an issue.

How do you speed up your page load times when you have 3rd party scripts such as GTM or Hot Jar etc..

If you use a CDN script to load the Google analytics side the file is cached and hot ready to be loaded so it’s faster than having it directly on the server.

Then I use the lite version.

https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/ga-lite@1/dist/ga-lite.min.js

<script>

var galite = galite || {}; galite.UA = ‘UA-YOURNUMBER’; </script>

You can do this with GTM too but I only need GA there.

Hope that helps.

Would you say it’s better to do e-commerce on Shopify than WooCommerce?

I don’t normally entertain this question but I will try.

They both have their purpose.

If you want to focus on scale and not have to worry about the technicals involved in keeping an eCommerce site running on the web then go with Shopify.

If you want to control and to be able to sell whatever you like and have full ownership of your entire IP then you go with woocommerce.

So Shopify can and have removed people stores just because they break their company rules, that’s all the work you did lost.

With Woocommerce the host would just ask you to move and give you time to do so.

Hope that helps.

What you recommend for optimizing 3rd party script??

If you use a CDN script to load the 3rd party side the file is cached and hot ready to be loaded so it’s faster than having it directly on the server.

Then when using GA I use the lite version.

https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/ga-lite@1/dist/ga-lite.min.js

<script>

var galite = galite || {}; galite.UA = ‘UA-YOURNUMBER’; </script>

You can do this with GTM too but I only need GA there.

Hope that helps.

Is there any reason you aren’t using the .webp file format for the images on your website?

Not really, I should be!

Do you recommend any Shopify Themes?

[Not affiliated with them]

But Debutify is impressive for a free theme.

Could you please provide a tutorial of site optimization using your custom library?

I’ve worked on that library for over 12 months, I am trying to find a way so I can win and you win too.

I’ll sure do a tutorial on-site optimization though if you wanted it

How much this speed of website enhance ranking in search engine?

Google has never said directly that speed can enhance the ranking but if you think about it logically Google has a hell of alot of sites to index.

RELATED:  Pick Her Brain! with Kari DePhillips

If they can crawl through fast, they will index it better.

If your site takes longer than 5 seconds to print, Google has moved on.

Maybe Steven Kang can chime in on that.

My view on that.

Are there factors you think Google Pagespeed score didn’t take into account?

Yes, how it looks.

Google doesn’t care how beautiful your site is visually (CSS).

Go into the inspect element and delete the stylesheet, that’s how Google sees your site.

Make sure that is optimized.

Other than that, Lighthouse covers everything that is technical.

I am currently using avada. I have achieved 97 on gtmatrix but the best ive got from page speed yet is 40 on mobile and 65 on desktop. What do u suggest?

Take all your scripts & stylesheets and create a bundle for both.

You can use technical tools like Webpack or Rollup to do this.

Where we can get this file LazyBoi.js and how we can implement it in WordPress? And what it does exactly?

It’s a custom thing I built.

I’m going to wrap it up and make it plug and play in Q1.

Right now though we use it for builds at my company Wecre8websites.

How do you optimize site for speed that has ads running through header bidding with so many moving parts involved in serving ads through different partners, ssps and dsps.

This I’d not considered but I will tackle it immediately!

I guess we would do some preloading…

I saw that you are using gzip compression on your web and I was wondering if you have tried Brotli and what are your thoughts about it?

No,

*Immediately Google’s Brotli*

Do you think for SEO purposes it’s good to use the built in Shopify blog? What are your thoughts on the URL structure Shopify uses like /pages, /products, /collections etc?

Thats the painpoint of Shopify I hate the most.

Building Headless is a way around that so you can have custom strecture.
