Wise Marketing Secrets Interview Series with Devlin Duldulao

Devlin is a workaholic and insomniac and if he had his way, he’d try to convert anyone to be like that also. He may not look at it, but he’s really a nerd at heart or maybe he’s a late bloomer when it comes to the latter.

He can get along well with most people, but he can be quite opinionated and stubborn on his ways.

Even though Devlin’s days are mostly spent on being an SEO consultant, web designer, conversion rate optimization specialist, and an Adwords expert, he still has not yet completely left behind his passion for a cause.

So, if he’s not in front of his laptop, he’s mostly likely away on a medical mission.

He co-founded Outsource SEO Philippines Ltd. Co. and SEO Training Philippines in 2013.

How did you start out as a marketer?

At first, I wasn’t really sure what I was doing back then. I asked one of my friends, who owned a business, if she would like to try SEO for her website for free. After explaining to her the benefits of SEO in 5 minutes, I was able to convince her to give it a go.

A few days later, she gave me her site’s control panel. After working on her website for 3 months, it popped up on the first page of Google. That was really an inspiring feeling for me upon seeing her business rank 1st for her keywords.

Within that week, I started hearing from her that their website’s inquiries were flowing in. I had no idea that it was the day that I was actually branching out as an online marketer.

Looking back, what is your hardest struggle when it came to delivering results?

The hardest struggle that I could think of was the time when I was still in the trial-and-error phase. Not only I’d learned many things from my mistakes, it also proved to me that there’s no 1-shoe-fits-all solution in SEO.

How did you get your first client back then, and what kind of service did you do for them?

Outsource SEO Philippines’s first client back then was a known fast-food chain here in the Philippines that we got through our friend’s referral.

We were glad that they were not only looking for SEO service, they also wanted someone to redesign their website and do their online marketing which gave us opportunities to explore the side of social media marketing, email marketing, and web designing.

What do you find most rewarding about what you do?

Seeing our clients succeed in their businesses through our help is the most rewarding aspect of what we do.

We have a lot of readers who are bent on becoming freelancers, aside from freelancing how else can someone earn online, and what is your advice?

Here are my advice to those who want to be freelancer marketers. Never stop learning new things, invest in short courses to fortify your abilities, and accept new jobs even at low rates just to hone your newly-developed skills.

I know the things that I’ve mentioned are not easy to do. But I’m telling you, eventually, you’ll reap what you sow.

You’ve been tasked with redesigning the company’s brand strategy from the ground up. Walk us through your process.

The first and most important thing to do with redesigning a company’s brand strategy from the ground up is to identify your online target market.

Your logo, web design, content, PPC campaigns, Facebook marketing strategies will all come down to your target audience profiles.

What recently-developed marketing strategy, technique or tool interests you the most right now?

Mobile app promotion is what I’m now focusing due to its increasing demand and importance.

What do you do to stay up to date with new marketing techniques?

I’m using Facebook to keep me up to date on this fast-changing internet marketing.

How? I’ve liked some fan pages of respected blog sites that are related to SEO, Adwords, conversion rate optimization, social media marketing, web designing, content marketing.

I also joined several groups of SEO, web design, and copywriter to know assorted learning experiences within those communities.

Can you tell us about a project you’re most proud of from your past work history?

From all the projects we’ve handled, there’s a one project that I would say I’m particularly proud of.

One day, a guy called us up and was asking if we could help rebuild their past family business. Even though the guy had no money to pay us on a monthly basis, we saw his eagerness to restore the business they used to have.

So we decided to build him a website to start with and we applied SEO. After a year, he was able to buy a car, employ several people including his mother and brother, and put up their own office space.

Which one book/blog post would you recommend every Marketer should read?

Not really should, but I would recommend reading “How to Build Websites that Sell” by Peep Laja.

Just by reading the book’s table of contents, you’ll realize right away that the book was written to give online marketers a step-by-step guide in boosting conversions on their site – from design to copywriting to marketing efforts.

What advice would you share with other Marketers who want to become more productive?

Invest in trainings, read articles about internet marketing instead of scrolling on your Facebook to see what your friends or relatives are doing, stay away from distractions while working, and last but not the least, be proactive.

If there’s one Marketing Guru you’d recommend who and why?

Aside from online marketers like Benj Arriola and Neil Patel, I would highly recommend Trond Lyngbø for online marketers and SEOs to follow.

This person, who’s the ‎Senior SEO Consultant & Founder of Search Planet AS, shares insights and tips based on his experiences throughout handling clients for more than 10 years.

One thing in common among the 3 known marketers I’ve mentioned, is that they share their secrets. Tried and tested secrets that made them successful in this business.
